Game Jam theme

The purposed theme by the jam was Out of control (hosted by GMTK),  you could do anything relationed about it, a little joke, something about no control over the player or what pop up in your head, but the most important thing it was your game had to have something relationated about the theme.

Importante note: all this game was done from scratch during the game jam duration.

Brainstorm phase: initial idea

As our first game jam and being so less time to develop, we had thought that a puzzle game would be a nice type of game to produce in a short time. With levels builded by us from zero, we could do a great difficulty balance, showing step by step what each character could do.

So we gave distinctive features for each of them to make a not so complex game that is hard to understand, we wanted some like Fireboy and Watergirl, simple mechanics, but that was envolving with more complexes levels and puzzles to resolve with the same character skills.

The game: Tri gone mETry

Plot: In Tri gone mETry you will be in control of a trio of ET workers that will need to fix the power source of several establishments throughout the galaxy, but there is a twist, each alien has its own set of skills and the time in which you control them is purely luck. If you're able to complete it, you will return them to the headquarters through a waygate.

Main gameplay loop: Use each unique skill of the characters to solve the puzzles and reactivate the portal that teleports you to the next level. But be careful, you don't have all the control at all, each character is randomly select with a random amout of time and sometimes the screen can be really messed up, so take every second to do what you really want!

Tri gone mETry features

- Multi characters control

- Each character with your own skill

- Puzzles levels

- Original soundtrack

- Differents levels

My experience

As the first game jam that I had participated, in the begging I was asking myself if I could do scripts from zero only in two days. But some hours before the game jam was gonna start, I only putted in my head that I was participating of that for my experience, knowledge and the main thing, fun.

What I could do I was gonna to do, I was going to give all of me to make the best game that I could with my team, that was my thought, and did it good for me. I learned to code, resolve problems, debug and produce in a short period of time. I never thought that I could do a game in 2 days only, ok, it's not the perfect game, but it's playable from the begging to the end and that is what did made me happy about it.

"Post mortem"

What went rigth: As our first game jam and being so short period of time, in general the most level design was pretty well balanced. The puzzles was done in a way that evolutes the difficulty each level, and presenting what each character does with your skill. The use of lights was not only used for aesthetic, but for part of mechanic too (only green character can light up the scenario).

What went wrong: The tutorial could be more detailed and helpful, not only a png imagem on the corner of the screen. The timer that change randomly the characters was added to fit better the game on the game jam theme, but turned out that this feature it depends just of the player luck, making some part of the level be boring, because you could have done everything with certain character, and you had to wait the righ character that you wanted to finish the puzzle.

Any future plans?

I wanted to change some features of this game without worrying with the game jam theme, like does the character selection be no longer randomly, a local multiplayer to give more gameplay and take out the screen reverse feature that was massively bad criticized.
